Demo time for Jean-Marie Baertsch

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

mco-jmb-demo1.jpgmco-jmb-demo2.jpgA good thing about being a pro BMX rider is that you get asked to do demos. At demos you can usually ride at 80% and the crowd loves you. As long as you do a 360, tailwhip and backflip, you’re their best friend.

It helps if the set-up is nice and if the crowd gets into it. If that is the case, the level will go up to 95% or even higher depending on how good looking the ladies are that are watching. Mirraco rider Jean-Marie Beartsch recently did a demo in Switzerland but if he hooked up we do not know.

AST DEW TOUR ANNOUNCES PLAYSTATION PRO MOMENT WINNER Fans Choose Mike Spinner as Winner for Quad Whip in Competition at Tour’s Right Guard Open

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

mco-spinner-quadwhip.jpgThe AST Dew Tour, the world’s premier season-long action sports tour, today announced the winner of the PlayStation Pro Moment Award from the Right Guard Open. Voting began on Monday, July 21, the day after competitions ended. Fans could view the videos at AST.com or on V CAST Videos from Verizon Wireless and vote online at AST.com or via text on Verizon Wireless until Friday, August 15.

Fans selected Mike Spinner as the winner after he performed a quadruple tailwhip in competition during the BMX Park Finals. Spinner placed second in the competition.

“I’m really psyched on winning the PlayStation® Pro Moment from Cleveland. I’ve been thinking of the quad whip for a long time,” said Spinner. “The Dew Tour is awesome for us riders, because it gives you five month to progress your riding and show off new tricks. PlayStation® has a big part in that progression because they reward people for doing tricks for the first time. It’s really cool to get credit from the fans for a trick you’ve worked really hard on.”

Spinner faced stiff competition for the PlayStation® Pro Moment Award. The complete list of Pro Moment nominees includes:

· Cameron White (BMX Dirt), distanced himself from the competition when he landed his signature barspin backflip to tailwhip to secure the win.

· Shaun White (Skateboard Vert), completed a frontside rodeo board varial to stalefish, which earned him his first win of the season.

· Paul Rodriguez (Skateboard Park), performed a switch kickflip backside tailslide which catapulted him to a first-place finish in the Finals.

· Simon Tabron (BMX Vert), landed an impressive no-handed 540 to barspin, but stiff competition gave him a fourth-place finish.

· Mike Spinner (BMX Park), pulled the first-ever quadruple tailwhip in BMX competition, marking a milestone in trick progression. He finished second to Daniel Dhers.

Spinner wins $5,000, a PLAYSTATION®3 and a library of games to reward his skills. Online polls open on the Monday following each event.

Further, Spinner will select his favorite amateur trick from the PlayStation Rising Stars presented by Woodward. The talented amateur selected will win a PSP® and library of games. But that’s not all; their video will also be displayed next to the pro’s at AST.com and on the PlayStation Network.

Alin Moldovan, Romanian Mirraco rider, wins first national street BMX contest!

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

mco-alin1.jpgLast weekend, in Sibiu, the cultural heart of Transylvania, the crème de la crème of romanian BMX-ers gathered for the scene’s first street BMX contest, under the X-Cup label. The venue of the event was the marvellous Sub Arini park of the city, where the organizers prepared a delicious street spot, containing various stairsets, some rails, different length ledges and an array of gaps. More than 1000 specatators came to witness what was about to become an amazing competition with a vast range of tricks, some of them never seen before in Romania.

mco-alin2.jpgMirraco rider Alin Moldovan stood out of the crowd and destroyed the entire location properly: perfect 360 gap over the small ledge at the dome, tailwhip and 180 barspin upwards off the long ledge, feeble to barspin-out at the big grindbox and various other tech-combos worth mentioning. Alin also pulled what would’ve been the best line of the contest, with a bunnyhop barspin over the marker-tape, a 360 over the following 9-set, manual down the aforementioned ledge and a bunnyhop to tailwhip at the smaller ledge, by the streetrail.

Speaking of the streetrail, Alin owned it, by double peg grinding it second-try, and left it abused, as he should. Mr. Moldovan decided it was time to spice things up and raise the bar, so he stuck a pretty clean tailwhip at the impressive 9-set, which gave fellow riders some trouble, and shut down the competition hereby. Alin was crowned winner of the day, as expected, and walked away with the prizemoney and his friendly smile, probably thinking about the party that was due that night.

With friendly greetings from Romania,

Maximilian Munteanu

BMX Plus! September 2008

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

mco-laird-plus-september200.jpgIt was Mirraco rider Mike Laird who got the advertisement in the new BMX Plus! issue doing a 180 whip off a skinny ledge. The issue also has an article about getting sponsored. They asked several brands how they approach the subject and this is how Mirraco’s Jim Ford responded:

“All of the topics are important. The current Mirraco team covers all the bases and has a good mix of riding skills and personalities. Not all of our team members are contest riders, but they all have riding skills that translate into TV coverage, video parts or magazine coverage. Some have tattoos, some have lots of gold medals, and some don’t have any medals. The point is, we’re looking for diversity, not clones. When we come across someone with the potential to develop into a team rider, we’ll flow some product and see how things go. If a spot opens up on the team we’ll probably pick a flow rider who best fits the spot that’s open.”

Update by Ryan Guettler

Sunday, August 10th, 2008

mco-guettler-xgames14.jpgHey Guys! Well, it was X Games time and I had just come off a big crash in Cleveland- slammed my head, knocked my teeth out and had to get stitches in my face. I went back to Greenville, but instead of sitting there not riding- I jumped in a van and headed out to California with some friends from Australia for X Games 14 in LA.

Going into it I didn’t know what to expect with the super park course, but when I got there it felt like a course I would ride back in Australia. I wasn’t too psyched that it didn’t have obstacles to show crazy tricks on, but the format was more my style and I was psyched on it. Growing up, I always watched X Games, you get to see which kid was doing the newest craziest tricks.I was just psyched to be there again!

Next on the program is to head to the dentist to get my teeth fixed which is awesome- I hate smiling right now! After that, I head back to Greenville to keep riding my bike. It’s really hot out there, so I have to deal with that which is no fun. From there I head to Portland for the next Dew Tour stop.

Check back in with you all soon!

-Ryan
