Mirraco rider Nigel Sylvester opens his FORMAT BMX Boutique in NY

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

mco-format1.jpgNigel Sylvester’s dream has always been to own his own company or do his own thing. With the opening of the Format Boutique in Queens, this dream became reality sooner than he’d thought. We fired over some questions to the Mirraco rider and this is what he came back with.

You recently started a BMX Boutique in New York, how did that come about?

Nigel: Well basically the opportunity arose and I figured it could be a great situation and I jumped on it.

format3.jpgWhat brands did you start selling in Format initially?

Nigel: Initially we’re starting with Animal, G-shock, Nudie, MHI, Acapulco Gold, King Stampede, Amongst Friends, PegLeg, Akomplice, 10 Deep, Mishka, Rogue Status and The Hundreds and expanding from there.

Plans to go more into that direction in the future or will bikes be the main focus at Format?

Nigel: We plan to keep a nice solid balance at Format to accommodate everyone.

format2.jpgWas there a lack of good BMX shops in NY or has the scene grown and it makes sense to open another shop?

Nigel: The scene in New York has always been amazing and over the past few years it’s been getting better, the presence of a BMX shop or company in NY isn’t really there so Format just adds to the growing BMX community in New York city on an industry stand point.

Have you received good support from the BMX industry so far?

Nigel: Yeah kids seem to be all about it, so I’m pretty siked.

formatFull-Logo.jpgIf you knew beforehand how much work it would be to open a shop, would you have done it?

Nigel: Yeah hard work doesn’t scare me LOL. Having a shop and a company has always been a dream of mine, I just didn’t think it would happen at this time in my life. I sit back now and think about it and it excites me. I look forward to see what happens in the future.

You seem to have traveled a lot lately, who have helped out in the meantime getting everything ready?

Nigel: Yeah I’ve been traveling a ton recently I’m actually on a plane right now. But my other partners are doing a fabulous job running the day to day at Format.

How can you reach your shop with the public transportation system for tourists who are in NY and want to come over to check out your place?

Nigel: Well, we are located at 92-29 queens blvd. Rego Park Queens NY 11374. The best way would be bus or the G,V or R train so if you’re in the area, come show some support.

A little modification to a Mirraco Signature bike

Monday, May 26th, 2008

mco-signature-lowrider.jpgWhen you buy a bike, it’s all yours. You can do with it what you want. Gabe FM made “a few” modifications to his Mirraco Signature bike and likes it a lot.

Sure looks different from the way he bought it in the shop but again, there are no restrictions on what to do with it. Enjoy the ride.

RIDE BMX magazine July 2008

Sunday, May 25th, 2008

mco-ride-blend2.jpgIf you are looking for a great BMX mag in the newsstands this month you will come across a copy of the July issue of RIDE BMX. When you flip that mag open you will see Nigel Sylvester on the inside cover spread doing a 180 to backwards crooked grind to barspin in Austin, TX. It’s the latest Mirraco advertisements and yes we’ve made it to the inside cover spot. Sweet.

mco-guettler-vans-adp.jpgOutlaw Ryan Guettler is featured in the latest Vans Whip 2 (with the Guettler print) advertisement doing a superman backflip somewhere in Australia. Chris Polack took that action photo while Colin MacKay took the picture of the outlaw chilling.

Nigel Sylvester and Mike Spinner can be found in the Nike ad and the Mirraco Blend 2 complete bike makes it in the Product Section as the first item. They used the wrong URL though. www.mirrabikeco.com is the one!

Bike shop visits with Mike Spinner

Saturday, May 24th, 2008

mco-spinner-shopping1.jpg So this is the second and last day of the spontaneous Mirraco Tour for Jim Ford and myself. Two days ago I flew home to Florida. I hung out with some friends that night, then the next day at 8am, Jim and I went to 5 bike shops.

mco-spinner-shopping3.jpgIt was pretty cool just for the fact that it is the area where I’m from so it’s cool to go back to the shops I used to go to when I was a little kid ha ha ha. Today I actually remembered to bring my camera and took some pictures.

mco-spinner-shopping2.jpgWe took about a two hour drive to the Naples area and hit up two cool bike shops. Then our plan was to hit up an Air boat ride in the everglades but it rained out. Better luck next year to see some gators !!!

Cassleberry Jam, Florida. By Dave Rytell

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

mco-rytell-florida-jam.jpgSo last week the trail jam in Cassleberry went down.. it was to help raise money to keep the house going. They are struggling and that house has been bmx friendly before I even started riding! So if you want to donate, get ahold of Shadow Conspiracy help the cause!

mco-rytell-florida-dirt-jum.jpgThe jam was insane, we showed up at around 11 am and people where already killing it! People where out there at 5am fixing the jumps getting them all nice and smooth…We rode the trails all day. There was not a time where there was no one cruising through.

rytell1.jpgThe bbq was going all day… then at about 1 we had the bunny hop contest.. was fun I took it…. and then we had the high jump contest. It was wild! Me, Colt and my buddy Kyle were the only ones jumping it. Kyle tried to go all the way, a good 11 feet to flat and got wrecked….

Kids where chugging pool water for stems! Jumping through the big line with a cracked frame to win a new one… wtf! and about night fall things started getting loose! A couple fights and a bunch of drunk wild kids going nuts. Me, Kyle and Colt did not end up leaving till about 5 am.

mco-rytell-florida-fire.jpgWe ended up having to ride about 45 miles back home because our ride left early.. but it was well worth it…. hope you enjoy the pics!

RYTELL

Thanks to all the sponsors that helped out FBM bought a keg, yeah! and thanks to Shadow and Sparkys distribution for throwing in shirts, parts, frames from Subrosa.. here for kicks.com and everyone else!

Jean Marie Baertsch finds a new bowl

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

mco-jmb-sankt-gallen.jpgIn between school, work, and finishing up his helicopter license Jean Marie Baertsch finds time to ride his Fivestar over in Switzerland. The Swiss vert rider hasn’t had the opportunity to ride a vert ramp for months but he has been hitting up new concrete parks like this new one in Sankt Gallen.
