Dave Mirra reports on The Dew Tour in Portland

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007
mco-dave-portland-x-down.jpgHey what’s up it’s Dave. I’m a few days behind but I wanted to check in and tell ya about the finals in Portland. I must say that pretty much every final in Portland was off the hook. The level of riding is so amazing right now and If you ever get a chance to check it out live you’ll trip, I promise. Mco-Dave-Portlnd-turndown.jpgSo, anyways going into prelims my attitude was kinda like, ride smooth and see what happens. I ended up qualifying second and I was pretty psyched because I kept it clean and most importantly I stayed on my bike. Very important these days because everyone is so good. mco-dave-portland-whip.jpgMy plan for the finals was the exact same. Get a first run down and see where I stand. I put a really good run together and I was sooo happy. It felt like the old days. My score was posted and I was in the lead but Daniel Dhers still had to go. Daniel rode and they posted his score and I was still in the lead. I couldn’t believe it. Daniel hasn’t been beat all year. Anyway, I was on the leader board and it felt great for a change. mco-dave-portland-flipwhip1.jpgRound 2 was underway and nobody stepped up yet. So then Spinner’s up next and comes out with a 1080 and I was like, that was it. Spinner threw some big stuff and I knew he would top it. I was really happy for him. First win on the Dew Tour and his dad came to watch him. Winning is everything because I felt awesome with second. Can’t wait till Salt Lake. Time to get back to riding. Later. dm Pics by Sean Hargraves

Park winner Mike Spinner on his Dew Tour Portland win

mco-spinner-portland-first-.jpgOkay, so today was the whole park contest; prelims and finals. At the Dew Tour’s 3rd stop I was really nervous because in Prelims I was the second to last guy to go in the 2nd heat so I saw what everybody was doing. Riding wise the whole time it was NUTTTTSSS !!!! In my first run I tied with a few people for 12th,11th and 10th, I was nervous I was going to not make it in so I upped my run a little bit and got up to 7th place in prelims. I was pretty happy with that. As The Finals came, I was thinking about putting down a safety run and then go for it. As everybody was riding so nuts I said screw it and I went for it in my first run. 7whip, a 9 and a 5whip I pulled. I was in first place for a few spots till Diogo, Mirra and Dhers pushed me down. But I didnt really care after that I had nothing to lose, I was just having a good time after that but what I didn’t want to skip was when Mirra went; he KILLED IT!!! So nuts, riding so smooth, so big, it was awesome. He was in first place. When it came back to me all I was thinking was 1080. I dropped in, did a few things, hit the box, threw the 1080 and pulled it. I didn’t even believe it, I just kept going though with my mouth open half the time like I was dreaming, I pulled a 5whip, 900, 7 turndown to x-up and then a double whip at the end. I threw my bike down screaming. I ended up in First place and nobody topped me. I am soo HAPPY !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mike Spinner

Mike Spinner wins Park in Portland, Mirra gets second

Sunday, August 19th, 2007
mco-mirra-portland.jpgFor a while Dave Mirra was in the hot seat at the Vans Invitational contest, the third stop of the Dew Action Sports Tour. Dave had put a terrific first run together that included a long no-handed three-sixty, wild 720, 3-whip up he step-up, flairs and downside whips all over the course and a big 540 air. He was in a solid lead until team mate Mike Spinner started his second run. With his dad in the crowd (first time he saw his boy ride at a big contest) Mike wasn’t going to let anyone down, including his dad. mco-dave-spinner.jpgSpin to win? You know it. Mike 360-d a bunch of ramps, then added 180 more degrees on a 540 (with tailwhip). Spinner also did 720-s with a tailwhip or a turndown and an x-up. You want more rotations? What about a 900 air on a quarterpipe? That’s two and a half rotations. Enough to get dizzy? Not really. Mike pulled another 1080 in a contest and he couldn’t have done it at a better time. This trick gave him half a point more than Dave Mirra’s score and noone beat that. Congrats to Mike Spinner but also to Dave Mirra for making the top spots in Park at the Dew Tour in Oregon. Kicks ass. Final results Park Vans Invitational, Portland, Oregon. 1. Mike Spinner 2. Dave Mirra 3. Daniel Dhers 4. Scotty Cranmer 5. Ryan Nyquist 6. Diogo Canina 7. Ben Wallace 8. Steven McCann 9. Garrett Reynolds 10. Allan Cooke 11. Josh Harrington 12. Colin Mackay A turndown over a long and fast set followed by a perfect 720, a double tailwhip and a double backflip gets you sixth place at dirt events these days. It’s hard to do double rotations around your axis, around the headset and upside down. Ryan Guettler did it clean and got sixth at dirt. Results Dirt Final Portland: 1. Dennis Enarson 2. Diogo Canina 3. Anthony Napolitan 4. TJ Ellis 5. Ryan Nyquist 6. Ryan Guettler 7. Chris Doyle 8. Cory Nastazio 9. Colin Mackay 10. James Foster 11. Corey Bohan 12. Morgan Wade

Dave Mirra checks in. Who let the dogs out?

mco-dawg.jpgWhat’s up everyone. Just checkin in, it’s the morning of the big day. We have park prelims and finals in the same day. Bud, that’s a long day. Practice starts at 9:45am, prelims kick off at 1ish and if you’re lucky to make the finals, it starts at like 7pm. That’s what I call endurance. Anyway, the course is quite a bit tighter than the previous stops but it really flows and I think you will see a lot more variation in the way people ride it. This also is the first stop on the tour where we don’t have to share the course with sk8. The advantage is we get a lot more practice. On another note. What’s your take on Michael Vick?  That’s pretty sick and if you’re a dog lover, what is this dude thinkin’? He makes millions and he is one of best quarter backs ever and this is what he does for fun. If you don’t know who Vick is, he’s the quarter back for the Atlanta Falcons and he is charged with running a dog fighting camp outside Richmond, VA.. When the dog doesn’t perform well in the ring, he kills em’. If this bothers you as much as it bothers me, feel free to send me your take on it. Well, it’s time to change gears and focus for the big day in Portand, Oregon. I will send u some photos and let u know how it goes. Peace. dm

TM Gator, straight from Portland…

mco-portland-gator.jpgYo, finals were out of hand. I was at the hotel having skaters and motocross riders talking about it. First off Ryan G. owning the double flip. This was one of the craziest contest I have seen in years. Dennis Enerson ended up taking first. Congrats, can’t believe this kid is 16 years old. With Diogo Canina taking second, and Anthony Napolitan taking third. I will tell you this, every person in finals deserved first. All the guys are laying low tonight. Park prelims and finals are in the same day tomorrow. Spinner’s dad is in town which is awesome, what up pops. Mirraco rider Nigel Sylvester was seen at the Nike party  and said nothing but good things about the comp. Tune in tomorrow and if you’re here, say hi. Talk to you all soon…….. Gator

Dew Tour stop 3 update from Gator

Friday, August 17th, 2007
mco-portland.jpgYo guys what’s up it’s Gator. I’m in Portland with all the guys. First off, if you get a chance to get out to one it’s way better than TV. So many things go down that you will never see on your Television. Dirt prelims were better than any finals this year.  Here’s a few things that went down:  Allan Cooke did a huge superman seat grab flip, James Foster with a huge tailwhip to tailwhip back that was insane, Guettler did a huge flip no footed cancan. Finals are tonight and if things get crazier, it will probally be the contest of the year. After prelims we all went out to dinner at this steakhouse Morton’s. It’s good to get away from the contest and get a chance to hang with everyone and talk about old stories and new ones. Everyone never wants to talk BMX but it’s inevitable. Stories of legends like Todd Lyons will always bring the house down. It reminds me that no matter what I say, riding is not something I just do. This is my life. I don’t know anything else better. Well I’m out. Talk to you guys soon, it’s time to go watch finals… Gator P.S Nigel is also in Portland so look out for a street riders’ outlook on the contest…..d
